RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
