EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
