The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role.
