As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
